I consider myself a pretty good photographer. Correction. I consider myself a pretty good AMATEUR photographer. People are always complimenting me on the pics I take of my kids, often asking what type of camera I use and where I have my pictures printed (back when I printed pictures; I'm quite behind). But you know what? I truly think it's more than that. Sure, having a nice camera helps, but there are plenty of cameras out there that are newer and fancier than mine and people seem to like my digital photography as well as my prints. So what is it about my photographs that grab people and how can you learn the same tricks? I've got a great book for you to check out: How to Photograph Children by Lisa Jane and Rick Staudt.

I was rather excited when I was given the job of being the Portrait Photography Editor here at Picture My Camera. Why you ask? Well, because my background is in portrait photography and it's something that I've recently jumped back into, with both feet. I've always had a passion for it, and now I get to share that with you!

Your child is adorable. Your friend's child is adorable. So why does your friend's child look so much MORE adorable in pictures than yours? That's easy... the lighting. When photographing infants and children, making the most of natural light will make most of your pictures.

For the debut of the PictureMyCamera monthly photography contest, the theme was family. It seemed to make sense for January, the month following so many holidays and family travel. Here are the top 10 finalists, based on the number of views of each entrant's photo. You can vote just once. Any violation of that rule will disqualify the entrant. The winner will get almost $260 in cool prizes according to the January Photo Contest rules. Voting continues for three days, closing at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, February 4. Also be sure to enter the February photo contest with a couples theme!

My FAVORITE technique when photographing people, especially children and infants, is to zoom in. Think about it... What makes babies so beautiful? It's their bits... those tiny toes, squishy rolls of skin... those bits that only come with babies. Those are the parts that I want to remember, so that's what I photograph most often.
